Fairness Index Measures to Evaluate Bias in Biometric Recognition

چکیده
The demographic disparity of biometric systems has led to serious concerns regarding their societal impact as well applicability such in private and public domains. A quantitative evaluation fairness is an important step towards understanding, assessment, mitigation bias applications. While few, existing measures are based on post-decision data (such verification accuracy) systems, we discuss how pre-decision (score distributions) provide useful insights fairness. In this paper, introduce multiple measures, the statistical characteristics score distributions, for a generic system. We also propose different variants each measure depending contribution from constituent groups needs be combined final measure. case, behavior been illustrated numerically graphically synthetic data. imbalance benchmarking datasets often overlooked during assessment. novel weighing strategy reduce effect through non-linear function sample sizes groups. proposed independent modality, thus, applicable across commonly used modalities (e.g., face, fingerprint, etc.).

Embedding Local Quality Measures in Minutiae-Based Biometric Recognition
Degradation in data quality is still a main source of errors in themodern biometric recognition systems. However, the data quality can be embedded in the recognition methods at global and local levels to build more accurate biometric systems. Local quality measures represent the quality of local parts within a biometric sample. They are either combined into a global quality measure or directly ...
متن کاملDetermination of biometric measures to evaluate patient suitability for transoral robotic surgery.
BACKGROUND Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) represents a novel treatment for oropharyngeal cancer and obstructive sleep apnea. Appropriate patient selection is crucial. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether anatomic biometric measures are useful to determine the feasibility of performing TORS. METHODS Three surgeons independently evaluated feasibility in 51 soft-fix cadavers. T...
متن کاملFairness and Bias
Fairness is a social rather than a psychometric concept. Its definition depends on what one considers to be fair. Fairness has no single meaning and, therefore, no single definition, whether statistical, psychometric, or social. The Standards notes four possible meanings of “fairness.” The first meaning views fairness as requiring equal group outcomes (e.g., equal passing rates for subgroups of...
متن کاملOn Similarity-Invariant Fairness Measures
After introducing the basic principles behind the similarityinvariant smoothness measures for curves and surfaces, with references to the relevant literature, we discuss the ramifications of scale-invariance in various problems of image processing and analysis, and point out some unanswered questions.
متن کاملFairness Measures for Resource Allocation
In many optimization problems, one seeks to allocate a limited set of resources to a set of individuals with demands. Thus, such allocations can naturally be viewed as vectors, with one coordinate representing each individual. Motivated by work in network routing and bandwidth assignment, we consider the problem of producing solutions that simultaneously approximate all feasible allocations in ...
